The Occupation is the Fundamental Problem

The recent suicide bombing in Israel and the subsequent air bombing of Syria further illustrate the failure of Israeli and U.S. policies.

The fundamental problem is the continued military occupation and settlement of the Palestinian West Bank by Israel.  The cycle of violence is clear for all to see - the bomber’s brother and cousin had been killed by Israeli troops.

Sharon’s response with new raids into the occupied territories and the bombing of Syria is an desperate attempt to divert attention from the political and moral bankruptcy of his occupation policies.

The only just and honorable solution to the violence in Israel and Palestine is for the end of the illegal occupation and settlements, and the establishment and recognition of an independent Palestinian state.  Anything else is folly for the peoples now locked in a violent escalating embrace.
